Common rail
History
The common rail system prototype was developed in the 1960s by Robert Huber of Switzerland and Technology developed by Dr. Marco Ganser at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, later of Ganser-Hydromag AG (est.1995) in Obergeri.
The first successful use in vehicle production in Japan began in the mid-1990s. Dr. Shohei Itoh and Masahiko Miyaki of Denso Corporation, a Japanese manufacturer of automotive parts, developed the system of common rail fuel for heavy vehicles and turned it into practical use their common rail system ECD-U2 mounted on the truck Hino Ranger Rising and sold for general use in 1995. Denso claims the first commercial system train high pressure common in 1995.

The modern common rail systems, while working on same principle, are governed by an engine control unit (ECU), which opens each injector electronically rather than mechanically. This prototype was widely in the 1990s with collaboration between Magneti Marelli, Centro Ricerche Fiat and ELAS. After research and development by the Fiat Group, the design was acquired by the German company Robert Bosch GmbH for completion of the development and refinement for mass production. With hindsight, the sale seems be a tactical error for Fiat as the new technology has proved very profitable. The company had little choice but to sell, but as he was in poor financial condition at the time and did not have the resources to complete development of its own. In 1997, they have extended its use for passenger cars. The first passenger car that used the common rail system was the 1997 model Alfa Romeo 156 1.9 JTD and later the same year, Mercedes-Benz C 220 CDI.
Common rail engines have been used in marine applications and locomotive for some time. The Cooper-Bessemer GN-8 (circa 1942) is an example of a hydraulically operated common rail diesel engine, also known as a modified common rail.
Vickers used in common rail engines to submarine 1916. Doxford Engines Ltd (as opposed to heavy piston marine engines) used a common rail system (1921-1980) that a multi-fuel cylinder piston pump generated a pressure of approximately 600bar with the fuel being stored in cylinders with accumulators. Pressure control was achieved through a delivery stroke of the pump and an adjustable "wastegate". Camshaft timing mechanical valves were used to provide the spring Brice / CAV / Lucas injectors who injected through the side the cylinder in the chamber formed between the pistons. Early engines had a pair of cams time, one for the front running and other to the rear. Later, the engines have two injectors per cylinder, and the series finale of the constant pressure of turbocharged engines were equipped four injectors per cylinder. This system was used for the injection of both fuel oil and diesel oil (heated to a temperature 600cSt approximately 130C).
The common rail system is suitable for all types of road vehicles with diesel engines, from cars like the Fiat Panda City Nuova to executive cars such as the Volvo S80.
Common rail today
Today the common rail system has caused a revolution in diesel engine technology. Robert Bosch GmbH, Delphi Automotive Systems, Denso Corporation and Siemens VDO (now owned by Continental AG) are main suppliers of modern common rail. Car manufacturers refer to their common rail engines by their own brand:

Volkswagen Group has announced that the 2.0 TDI (common rail) engine will be available for Volkswagen Passat and the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta.

Principles
Solenoid or piezoelectric valves allow precise control over the electronic fuel injection time and quantity, and the higher pressure that the common rail technology makes available provides atomization of fuel. To reduce engine noise element of the engine electronic control can inject a small amount of diesel just before the main injection event ("pilot" injection), thus reducing its explosiveness and vibration, as well as optimization of injection and the amount of variation in fuel quality, cold starting, and so on. Some advanced common rail fuel systems perform up to five injections per stroke.
Common rail engines require no heating [citation needed] of time and produce lower engine noise and emissions than older systems.
Diesel engines have always used various forms of fuel injection. Two common types include the injection system unit and the dispenser / pump systems online (see Diesel and injector pump for more information). While these early systems provided accurate fuel quantity and injection timing control, they were limited by several factors:
They were driven cam and the injection pressure is proportional to motor speed. This generally means that the maximum injection pressure can be achieved at the highest speed of the engine and the injection pressure decreased maximum achievable motor speed decreased. This relationship is true for all pumps, even those used on common rail systems, with the system of units or a distributor, however, the injection pressure is related to the instantaneous pressure of an event single pumping without battery and thus the relationship is more important and troublesome.
They were limited on the number and timing of injection events which can be ordered in a single combustion event. Although multiple injection events are possible with these systems older, it is much more difficult and costly to achieve.
For the typical distributor / inline system start of injection was held in a predetermined pressure (often referred to as: pressure pop) and ends at a predetermined pressure. The result is characteristic of "dummy" injectors in the head that opened and closed at pressures determined by the preload on the piston of the injector. Once the pressure in the injector has reached a predetermined level, the diver would rise and begin the injection.
In common rail systems to store high pressure pump a fuel tank at high pressure up to 2000 bar and over (29,000 psi). The term "common rail" refers to the fact that all injectors Fuel is fed by a common rail fuel which is nothing more than a pressure accumulator when the fuel is stored under high pressure. The accumulator Supplies multiple injectors fuel pressure. This simplifies the aim of the high pressure pump in that it only has to maintain a commanded pressure target (either mechanical or electronic). The fuel injectors are generally controlled by ECU. When the fuel injectors are electrically activated a hydraulic valve (consisting of a nozzle and the plunger) is mechanically or hydraulically opened and fuel is sprayed into the cylinders to the pressure desired. Like nuclear fuel pressure is stored remotely and electrically operated injectors are the injection pressure at the beginning and end of injection is very close to the pressure in the accumulator (rail), producing a flow injection square. If the accumulator, pump and plumbing are sized correctly, the injection pressure and the rate will be the same for each of the multiple injection events.
