What are the possible reasons for my 96 Chevy Impala / Caprice be "limp" mode?

my 96 ss uses only reverse and third and i cannot figure out why. IVE taken to AutoZone and Autoparts advance and no diagnostic tools should even pick up something does not work like my work computer. IVE baught a new computer but I'm still stuck in limp mode. does anybody know of other reasons to explain why my transmission remain in this mode? sound of a V8 LT1 350 with an OBDII computer.

knock sensor, cam sensor oil at low engine Bad / son body short-circuit ground. I say bring it to a real shop that has a real diagnosis machine that can read and clear codes. The parts store is a player – and not so great.
