Check engine light on 04 Chevy Malibu Classic?

Is there a way to get the code without having to pay for a diagnostic test? No shops nearby to give me free checks check engine light. I know there used to be a way to check on the Chevrolet you with a jumper wire, but do not know if they got rid of it. The Classic 04 chevy is basically the 03 Malibu. Thank you!

The new OBDII need a code reader. If you have an Autozone near by, they will generate codes for free. Most auto parts stores also sell code readers for about $ 45 to $ 80. OBDII is the norm at the moment but this will change in 08 – 10. Not that this will effect your 04 chevy.
